Ibanez Bass Workshop
Pioneering new frontiers in bass development is nothing new for Ibanez.

For more than 40 years, Ibanez has pioneered new frontiers in bass development, pushing the boundaries of conventional designs for bass players of all styles and an aptitude for new ways of expressing themselves. This spirit of exploration has led to some of the most successful and popular production basses of all time. It is this same drive to bring new and relevant ideas to the forefront that serves as the basis for an ongoing exploratory project, appropriately dubbed the Ibanez Bass Workshop.

The impetus behind each one of these unique instruments comes from a personal desire by one or more members of the Ibanez bass development group to satisfy the particular needs of a very particular player. These inventions may not be for everyone, but for those who yearn to explore new sonic vistas through the medium of bass: The Ibanez Bass Workshop project may give you just what you're looking for.

SR Ashula

Development of this bass started from one simple question; Can we create both fretted and fretless-sound on one bass? The SRAS7 "Ashula" is the simple solution from Ibanez. With its unique construction, both the fretted and fretless parts are on one neck, enabling solid tone, chord work, smooth playing, sensitive voicing, and so on. Why not go hybrid? The "Ashula" expands the possibilities of the bass guitar in ways you have never experienced.

  • Horn

The SRSC's extended upper horn between the 13th and 24th frets far exceeds, in terms of performance, the traditional connection between the instrument's neck and body.

  • Scoop-Cut Back

Sculpted for comfort and easy access to the upper frets, the smooth graceful contour allows the palm of the left hand to move quickly and easily as it transitions up and down the neck.

  • 5pc Maple/Purpleheart Neck-Through

The Maple/Purpleheart combination is as musical and it is durable. These two extremely dense materials offer the foundation of great sustain.

  • Mono-Rail V bridge

The Mono-rail V is the ultimate bridge for bass string isolation. Each bridge is independently and securely locked down to the body for maximum vibration transfer without interference.

  • Bartolini® MK-1 Pickups

The full, clear tone of Bartolini® MK-1 pickups provide a tight bottom end with a mid-range that is articulate without being harsh.

  • Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band eq w/Eq bypass switch & Mid frequency switch

Precision tonal control, including a switch to choose passive-only operation. When the EQ bypasses activated, the treble tone control knob becomes the global tone control for the passive circuit.

SR Multi scale

The multi scale system is designed to optimize the tension of each string, helping to create a more "alive," open tone. Not only does this approach expand harmonic complexity, it also improves playability across all strings. Perhaps a little daunting at first glance, every player who has picked one up has commented with surprise on the ease and comfort of fingering the multi scaleboard.

  • 5pc Jatoba/Bubinga neck

Two of the most rigid and musical hardwoods set against one another to provide a thin neck with reliable long-term harmony.

  • Bartolini® BH1 pickups(SRFF805/SRFF806)

Balancing clarity with warmth is the hallmark of the Bartolini® BH1 pickup. Coils with lower resonant frequency provide tighter bottom end and a fuller midrange. The dual-coil style configuration maximizes articulation and a long blade pole piece widens the magnetic field, providing balanced string-to-string pickup response.

  • Bartolini® BH2 pickups(SRFF800)

The Bartolini® BH2 pickups provide a tight bottom-end, punchy mid-range, and smooth response. The dual-coil style configuration maximizes articulation and a long blade pole piece widens the magnetic field, providing balanced string-to-string pickup response.

SR Portamento

Over 25 years ago, the SR established Ibanez as the leader in innovative bass building. Throughout the years, we’ve made fretless versions of this classic for a limited number of Ibanez artists. Now, The Ibanez Bass Workshop makes this much sought after option available to SR players everywhere with the introduction of the SR Portamento. The SR Portamento offers a Rosewood fingerboard that extends the length of the standard SR neck to a hefty 30-fret length. Several years in the making, the SR Portamento's new AeroSilk piezo system delivers an uncanny touch of hollow-bodied openness, and realizes the Upright Double Bass sound to blend into the mix that both inspires and redefines the role of the solid body bass.

SR Crossover

Throughout the years, we've attentively observed as trends have developed and dictated the demand for different types of instruments to fulfill the creative visions of artists. Sometimes those visions can take us back to instruments of an earlier era. The SR Crossover is such an instrument. Shorter scale 6-string basses were popular in the late 60's, a zenith of experimentation and creativity. It is in that same spirit that Ibanez has incorporated our own elements of style and innovation to create the SR Crossover 6-string bass.

  • 5pc SR-6 Jatoba/Bubinga Bolt-On Neck

The tension on a 6-string bass neck is considerable. With this in mind Ibanez has given the SR Crossover a 5-piece Jatoba/Bubinga bolt-on neck for superior tone and excellent stability. Jatoba is a hardwood, known for its rigid strength and Bubinga is known for it's mellow, round tone. Together they create a the perfect neck for this unique instrument.

  • 30" Neck Scale

Basses with a scale of 34" are known as "long-scale". Following in the tradition of the 6-string bass of the 60's, the SR Crossover features a 30" scale Bolt-on neck, for what is commonly known as a "short scale" bass. This is highly desirable for guitarists who sometimes double as bass players. (The shorter scale having a feel closer to that of an electric guitar.)

  • Tuning

The SR Crossover is tuned like a guitar, E to E, only an octave lower, like a bass. This opens up a myriad of creative options for the daring to explore.

  • BTB 7strings
    Tight End bridge

Hybrid instrument that it is, the SR Crossover straddles the line between bass and guitar. Originally designed for guitars, this smooth, low profile bridge allows for tighter string alignment and a thinner fretboard. It features saddles that firmly lock on the base plate (to maximize string vibration transmitted to the body) and simple saddle height and intonation adjustments for easy setups.

  • EMG® 35HZ Pickups

The 35HZ Passive Pickup features a dual-coil design for low noise and plenty of output. Using EMG's "CS" design (Ceramic and Steel), this pickup has the punch and fullness of older passive designs along with added brightness for a better-defined tone. EMGHZ features solid bar poles that cover the entire width of the strings so it works great on the 6-string bass.

  • Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band eq

Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band eq is our latest refinement on the concept of simple, straightforward, no-nonsense EQ control. The Boost and Cut for the Mid Control are each centered on slightly different frequencies, an innovation that delivers a preset range of the most favorable bass tones.
