Alex Lee
Model(s) Used: RG
Band: Holy Grail
Ibanez: Who was your biggest guitar idol when you were starting to play? Who is it now?
Alex: Wow, when I first started? It was actually kind of in between Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai. One of my guitar friends was listening to them a lot, and that got me into the more soloing-type stuff. I'm still into Paul Gilbert, even now. I listen to him more now than I ever did before.

Ibanez: Did you take formal guitar lessons? What were some of the things you did to develop your technique?
Alex: I don't know if you would consider the internet as formal lessons [laughs]. I would just get a bunch of songs from artists and analyze their solos in tab. That's how I picked up sweeps and stuff like that. That was my practice.

Ibanez: When did you start playing Ibanez guitars?
Alex: It was my second guitar, so probably sometime around 2004. So it's been about 4 years at this point.

Ibanez: What drew you to the RG?
Alex: Yeah, I started out on the RG. I couldn't afford any of the Prestige models at the time. I didn't even know much about the old 550s or anything like that at the time. My friend had an RG320, and I liked the way it looked. I really like the way the Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai signature models looked, too. I never had the cash to get one though, because I didn't have a job. So I saved up as much as I could and got the RG370DX. I still have it, and I'm always jazzed about it [laughs].

Ibanez: How did you and all the members of Bonded By Blood come together?
Alex: Actually, it's pretty interesting. An old buddy of mine since I was born was our singer's girlfriend. She found out I played and asked if I wanted to be in a band with her boyfriend. So he came over one day and said, "Show me what you can play." So I was kind of intimidated, because I didn't know what he was expecting. After I got done playing around, he said, "Are you sure you want to be in a band with me?" [laughs] I had never been in a band before. Bonded By Blood is my first band. I never thought I was good enough to play in a band before. The drummer's girlfriend knew our singer. So she asked him if we needed a drummer, and we checked him out.

Ibanez: So your band was formed by girlfriends?
Alex: [Laughs] Yeah or by friends in general pretty much.

Ibanez: What was the number one lesson you guys learned from touring in Europe?
Alex: Stay clean [Laughs]! On tour, you don't always get to take a shower every day. Every show you get really sweaty, cause you're out there giving it your best. Always try to practice and get rest, too. It's easy to get burned out after the shows, but I always wanted to keep my chops up. Before the shows, I would be on the bus jamming with some of the other guitar players we were touring with. We all played pretty well, so we were giving each other lessons and tips and stuff. It really helped us a lot.

Ibanez: What do you guys have planned for 2009?
Alex: A lot of touring! We're gonna go back to Europe, and we're looking to get into some festivals over there.

Ibanez: What are you listening to right now?
Alex: The most recent thing I've been listening to a lot is Paul Gilbert's "Get Out Of My Yard". I've been trying to learn a lot of those licks, because I really like that album a lot. For more info on Alex and Bonded By Blood, check out their myspace page @
