Ibanez: What originally inspired you to play guitar? David: It would have to be my Dad. Growing up, my Dad was always playing, and I was always watching him. I would play his guitars when he wasn¡Çt watching [laughs].
Ibanez: Did you take any kind of lessons? David: My Dad showed me a lot of stuff, and from there I just studied a lot on my own. I just looked online and watched other bands. I took a few jazz classes, too.
Ibanez: When did you start playing Ibanez guitars? David: I would say 2003. That was when I graduated high school and got the S470, which I¡Çm still playing.
Ibanez: Was there anything in particular that drew you to the S470? David: The body shape. It had everything that I wanted, and it also had a thin body. I liked how the neck felt, too.
Ibanez: I understand that Killwhitneydead started as a studio project. How did you get involved with those guys? David: Matt Tribunal is the guy who runs Tribunal Records, and Killwhitneydead was his project. He wanted to do vocals in a band, and he put it out. Then, we were signed to Tribunal Records with The Demonstration. He didn¡Çt really have a band for that, it was just studio-hired musicians. He wanted to do it live, so he talked to us about playing in Killwhitneydead as well. We were kind of just doing cover songs, then we ended up going into the studio and tracking two albums.
Ibanez: How is playing in Killwhitneydead different from your other band, The Demonstration? David: In Killwhitneydead, the songs structure is a lot easier to follow. The guitar lines and solos are a lot easier. They¡Çre just straight-forward thrash riffs and breakdowns. So it¡Çs a lot easier to play. The first Demonstration album was pretty tech. So it was a lot more challenging.
Ibanez: When did The Demonstration form, and how did that all happen? David: We all went to school together. I grew up with the drummer and the guitarist. We were all playing in different bands, and somehow we just all came together. We formed The Demonstration, and we¡Çre still doing it.
Ibanez: You guys tour together quite a bit. What¡Çs it like having to switch gears and play two sets a night? David: All the past tours, Killwhitneydead was the headliner. We¡Çd usually put a band in between our sets, too. We backline and play as The Demonstration. Then, we just leave our stuff up there. The next band plays, and then we close the show out. At first, I would get pretty tired, but now I¡Çm used to it. We¡Çve done it so many times at this point.
Ibanez: Speaking of touring, what do you guys have coming up in the next few months? David: Right now, we¡Çre writing the new Demonstration album. We go in the studio on June 1st, and at the end of June we leave to go on tour. We¡Çre doing like eight weeks. So we¡Çre just trying to get all the music written right now.
