Peter Iwers
Model(s) Used: PIB
Band: In Flames
Ibanez: What was the recording process like for ¡ÈA Sense of Purpose"?
Peter: We first recorded 4 tracks of drums and some guitars on them and then moved on to bass. I used an Ampeg SVT3 mic¡Çed up with an SM57 and a 58 I think and an Ashdown connected through an MXR Dimebag Distortion. All these 3 channels were mixed together, with the low end coming from the 2 Ampeg channels and the high end distorted part from the Ashdown. We also used a line to give Toby (mixer) a chance to re create if that was his choice. As it turned out after those 4 songs, we went on to do the other 12 tracks all in a row, going back and forth bits and pieces at a time as some parts were written throughout the recordings.

Ibanez: I noticed on the making of DVD that you recorded 4 channels of bass. Do you try to achieve certain sounds with each channel or are they all fairly similar?
Peter: I'm into a wet low end sound with a lot of distortion helping up the high end without taking it over.

Ibanez: What role does your bass playing take in the writing process for In Flames?
Peter: The guitar players write all the riffs and show it to me and the drummer, and we write our own parts. Our singer does his lyrics by himself. I have a lot of creative input in In Flames as far as arrangements go and such, but the actual composing I¡Çm not involved in, other than approving the final stages of a song.

Ibanez: Do you have a favorite track off of the new album?
Peter: Not really. They are all pretty busy for me, which is how I like it. I have a lot of riffing and bass lines going down throughout the entire album, but if I had to choose one I¡Çd say ¡ÈDisconnected¡É.

Ibanez: What basses have you been primarily using lately and on the recording of the album?
Peter: I tried out so many of them, including the EDB. But I fell in love with the SR1005 series, which I used mainly for the new album.

Ibanez: Were there any particular features that drew you to those basses?
Peter: The sound they create with the Bartolini pickups and the neck-thru combined with the wood is amazing. It¡Çs something I¡Çve never been able to do with my previous basses, so I¡Çm really happy.

Ibanez: How have the shows on the Gigantour been going so far?
Peter: Excellent! People seem to be there for most of the bands, so it¡Çs not one of those tours where the headliner has some opening bands that people HAVE TO watch each night. They get into us really well and sometimes it almost feels like a headlining show.

Ibanez: What do you guys have planned for the rest of the year?
Peter: We will head back to Europe for summer festivals, and then we most likely will go to Japan and Australia. There will be a headlining run in Europe and the US/Canada, and then we¡Çll be home in time for Christmas.

Ibanez: What have you been listening to lately?
Peter: Sixx:AM, Priestess, Lamb of God, Elton John (old stuff),Hardcore Superstar, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss, 30 seconds to Mars, etc. etc. etc.
