It is with great sadness that Hoshino USA, Inc. informs the media of the passing of its long time employee and Communications Director, Paul Specht, on February 9th, 2010. Paul fell victim to Leukemia after a ten-month battle that began in April of 2009. Over the course of a 27-year career with Hoshino, Paul became highly regarded for his expertise and deep knowledge of the industry, which he often shared freely with his colleagues.

After starting with Hoshino as a customer service agent in 1982, Paul’s talent as a writer soon came to the attention of the company’s management. Shortly thereafter, he was enlisted by the Advertising / Marketing department to serve as a copywriter. Aside from copy, Paul was also called on to assist in creating names for many of the company’s products, such as the highly successful “Jam Pack” series for beginner guitarists. His responsibilities later expanded beyond advertising and sales literature copy to include overseeing and writing of legal documents and contracts, rendering him as the company’s principal interpreter of legal affairs, large and small.

Paul’s crowning achievement at Hoshino was the implementation and authoring of Ibanez: The Untold Story, an almost 300 page book, chronicling the history of Ibanez guitars.

Ibanez: The Untold Story, Paul's crowning achievement

Paul labored diligently for three years on this monumental project and saw it through to completion. It is the only complete, authorized book on the history of Ibanez and, since its release in 2005, has served greatly to help enhance the brand’s continued legacy.

Outside of his work at Hoshino USA, Paul was an accomplished musician, playing the saxophone, harmonica, flute, and clarinet with several bands around the Philadelphia area. He was also an avid student of the Civil War, and was actively involved with a number of Civil War-related organizations including the GAR, the Civil War Preservation Trust, the Museum of the Confederacy, and the Friends of Gettysburg National Military Park.

Abraham Lincoln, one of Paul's most admirable heroes.

He was a member of a national group of Civil War enthusiasts, "Forlorn Hope," which discussed Civil War topics in an online forum and met annually for a battlefield tour weekend.

He is survived by one son, Stephan, and sisters Meredith Massi (Joseph) and Judith E. Haskell (Gordon). He is also survived by his longtime companion Kay Brockwell. Paul’s colleagues recall him as a person of great kindness, patience, and openness to everyone he came in contact with. He will be sorely missed by anyone who knew him.

Paul was called on to introduce many of Ibanez and Tama artists at NAMM. Here he introduces Stewart Copeland (Police).

Paul was beloved and admired by the Hoshino Family and the Music Industry. Many friends and associates have shared great memories and how special Paul was via email and phone.

If you would like to share a thought or memory, it would be greatly appreciated by all, especially Paul’s son Stephan, his family, and friends.

It was a particularly difficult week in light of the news of Paul's passing. Thoughts of the many wonderful times we've had and his sense of humor kept crossing my mind as I made those long drives to my various appointments. He will forever be a part of my memories.

So many memories of Paul going way back. The time when we were at a restaurant in Nashville. Paul had a little too much to drink, and was banging on the men's room door and yelling for Tommy Kato to get out, w/much cursing. That was just one of so very many. I had the pleasure to have Paul travel with me for a couple of days, years ago, in my territory and we got to know each other for the better. I will miss him for many reasons as he was a great musician, a big time and very knowledgeable Civil War buff &, most of all, his flair for over the top rhetoric and humor. His laugh, might I say cackle, was priceless.

The news of Paul Specht’s passing was a real blow. I considered him a pillar of the company, as well as a friend. I miss him.

The news of Paul started the week on a very somber note. Many of us have had a very long history with Paul at the company and it goes without saying that he will be sorely missed, not only for the work he has done for Hoshino, but for the personality he brought to the company. He definitely made the ride much more fun and interesting, and these are the memories that we will take with us. We will miss him.

The news of Paul Specht's passing was almost too much to keep going this week. Paul was a real character to say the least. His personality and wit was part of the fabric, there in Bensalem. We have all missed Paul over this past year that he had been ill, but had hope that he would return to the office and all would be well. Such a long hard fight…he is, and will be, missed for years to come.

I remember in 1996, when I joined the company, Paul spent a lot of time with me when I was in Bensalem for the first time, doing what he did best: communicating. It was obvious he had passion for Hoshino, its people, and what he did. He walked me thru my training with patience and, of course, his amazing humor. To me, Paul is one of those people that have made a big impact on my life, as much personally as professionally, and he will be sorely missed

I remember a few years back, I was lucky enough to play music with Paul Specht, Tom Appleton, Tim K, and Robbie Wood at the HUSA Christmas Party. Paul said: “let’s do some riffing back and forth” and that we did. Paul blew that sax like no other and that night has been etched in my mind, ever since. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, he pulled out his harp and really got the crowd screaming. I will miss Paul: he was the first person I met when I arrived in Bensalem in 1998 and he made a huge impression on me.

We all have our own remembrances of Paul Specht. Paul was the first person, and as it proved out, the most important person I dealt with when I applied for my job in 1994. He is, largely, the reason that I have this job. My first interview for the company was with Paul at NAMM 1994 over lunch, and I was immediately impressed with his openness and his genuine desire to get to know me. His energy, intelligence, creativity, dedication, and humanity, along with a great sense of humor, really made him the unique individual that he was. A true one-of-a-kind who will be forever missed and never forgotten. Thank you for everything Paul. May you rest in peace.

I was sitting/waiting for jury duty selection when Bill Reim called me. Sitting with a group of strangers was a bit unsettling when hearing about the loss of a colleague, but more importantly, a friend. One whose intellect I envied and came to rely on so often – especially his expertise in our industry. I don’t recall a subject that Paul didn’t have some knowledge of and was willing to share. Paul showed his kindness to everyone he came in contact with. I always admired his patience and willingness to give others the benefit of the doubt. Paul touched many lives. He will be sorely missed and always – especially that cackle - remembered.

I first met Paul in January of 1983 and we hit it off immediately -- a beautiful, happy, enjoyable, and unabashedly strange guy with a twisted sense of humor. We'd always catch up on at NAMM shows and usually a couple of times in between. We spent some time together when Paul was working on the book and maintained a regular email relationship since (sick jokes, musical recommendations, observations). I had my last email conversations with him last January, just before NAMM. We shared comments on a funny YouTube video and he was upbeat about his health. Needless to say, the news of his death fell heavily on me. Don't think I'll ever delete those last few emails -- they'll always make me smile.

All the memories I have of Paul during the 20 years I've worked at Hoshino are good ones and they all put a smile on my face. He was one person who covered the whole spectrum from business man, philosopher, father and historian to comedian, jokester, prankster and everything in between. He had the best poker face that he would use in so many situations that I would call it "The Paul Face". That same face would be used during a serious discussion or just before he was about to start into some raucous prank. The only thing better than that face was his laugh and that was priceless. I along with anyone who know Paul will miss him very much.

I knew Paul since he started after me in '82 as a customer service rep. Paul was a goofball. A glorious one at that. There was nothing he wouldn't do to either liven up a party whether it entailed putting the proverbial lampshade on his head or making a shocking comment. More often than not, he started the fun with his harps & began the musical portion of any gathering. He loved to play & we all loved hearing him. Whether he was playing for attention it was well deserved because we were all frozen in attention to his ability to perform & command our undivided glee. I loved that goof and there is not an ounce of disrespect in that description. A glorious nutjob who was one of a kind. The kind you don’t see much anymore. I will cherish his memory & miss him terribly. I love you my friend.

This is very sad. RIP. God, the music world has lost a lot in the past year. First Peter Steele, The Rev, Dio, Paul Gray, and now this guy. This sucks. RIP Paul and to all the musicians I mentioned. Fans or not, these guys deserve respect!!!

I've had the pleasure of knowing Paul for just about 10 years and never have I met anyone quite like him. His laugh...oh so contagious. His Hoshino office antics and pranks...classic! His musical abilities...unrivaled. He will forever be missed. To say that Paul Specht was an enormous part of our lives and of Hoshino as a company is a gross understatement. If you were blessed enough to know Paul, cherish your memories as they will live on forever. Paul, may you rest in peace. Thank you for the memories.

Paul's untimely passing gives us time for mourning and reflection of all of our memories in one great wave. I met Paul for the first time at Hoshino when he first was hired, back then he was quiet and subdued at least for the first week. By week two he had found his footing and proceeded to show the true person who was hired. That person, is the one we all loved and respected so much as there was never a dull moment with him. As I look back on my 20 years with Hoshino there are so many great memories ,so many continuing friendships, and Paul is in most of my images. His wicked sense of humor, his intellect, his musicianship, and his endearing friendship that has lasted all this time. Thanks Paul for all that you have done for me, and for all that you have meant to us.

Paul was a great friend to the Ibanez Collectors World forum at Ibanezcollectors.com. The group of guys there have really dedicated themselves to not just collecting the great vintage guitars from Ibanez, but of doing the research to really understand the various models and how they evolved over the years. Paul was a great resource inside Ibanez and through his friendship with some of the members, really helped bring Ibanez and its reputation as one of the great guitar companies to the public mind. That kind of exposure really builds Ibanez's "cred" with the wider guitar collecting community. Paul will definitely be missed.

Only had the opportunity to correspond with Paul by emails about my Ibanez collection and he was the warmest, most enthousiastic and most respecful Ibanez lover I've been given to met. His contributions to Ibanez in particular and to the musical world are priceless. He is missed and remembered in the whole musical world. RIP Paul. My best thoughts goes to yours.

I have many memories of Paul both in the Hoshino offices and during various company events such as NAMM. All of them bring a smile to my face. He was a good man, an incredibly diligent worker and a fantastic musician. My thoughts are with his family. We'll all miss him.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Paul personally, but I have been the recipient many times of his time and effort in helping the Ibanez fans over at the Ibanez Collectors World Forum. Over the years, Paul has been a gracious resource for the collectors in sharing his encyclopeadic knowledge of this brand. Pauls input has not only helped the collector community in researching the history of this improtant brand, but has helped all Ibanez fans more fully understand the growth of the brand Ibanez globally. Ican honestly say that my modest collection of Vintage Ibanez guitars is due in a large part to Pauls influence and the generous sharing of his time to the ICW... Paul will definately be missed....

I worked for Hoshino from '90 to '93. It was an awesome experience. I was saddened to hear of Paul's for too early passing. Paul was a good man with a good heart and I really liked him. He helped me a lot when I became the National Sales Rep for Starfield. I will always remember Paul's laugh, (yes it was a Cackle!) his generosity and his way cool Paul Butterfield Jean Jacket! I saw Paul at innumerable NAMM shows, but really met him via a 30 minute phone conversation we had about the beloved Ibanez instruments. It was from him that I picked up the phrase "spaghetti logo" that adorns dozens of my most prized instruments and pedals. Paul, your contribution, love for your craft, and for the music it inspired will be remembered. Thank you... Doug Doppler

What can you say about Paul that hasn't already been said. He was a true industry icon, and one of the nicest and and funniest people I ever know. I first met Paul when I interviewed for the New England rep position in 1994 and he was the one who called and told me I got the job. Even after I left the company in 1999, I always enjoyed running in to him at NAMM shows, and always made a special trip to the Hoshino booth to see him, and get his view on what was going on with the industry....always humorous! One of the most touching things he did was when my wife passed away in 2002, Paul made arrangements to have flowers sent on behalf of Hoshino USA. That's the kind of guy he was.

Paul was an amazing person and a good friend. We all become so busy in our lives we fail to appreciate how much someone has touched us. Paul was not just an employee at Hoshino but he was the voice of Hoshino's public relations. Whenever I see any advertisement, press release, catalog or any printed material from Hoshino, I can still hear Paul's voice. So I believe Paul is everywhere that any catalog or magazine advertisement he wrote is. So he is all around us and will be forever. Paul you will be missed and working with you for 18 years and on the Ibanez book will be forever one of my best memories.

I'm very saddened to hear of Pauls's passing. I'm fortunate to have worked with him at Hoshino and I greatly appreciated his help, along with his dry wit and wisdom. He was always professional and well-spoken, but at the same time a joker who never lost sight of the joyful kid inside. He was quite the musician and blew a mean sax and harp. I still have the marine band harmonica he recommended for me along with his handwritten instructions explaining how to play a basic scale. I happened to bump into him shortly after the Ibanez book was released. It had been a while, and I'm glad we had a few minutes to chat and catch up. Paul, thanks for helping me along the way and leaving me with some great memories. You will be missed.

Paul, a wonderful friend and fantastic musician, was instrumental in getting me into the music industry.. I had known Paul since the mid 80’s and played in several bands with him over the years.. I would often ask him about working in the music industry and he was always willing to share some insight… A selfless individual with a great sense of humor and relentless passion for Music and Hoshino who always held ethics and honor in high regard. I think of him often and miss him dearly.. He was truly one of a kind.

I would like to extend my sincerest condolensces to Mr. Specht's family and co-workers. I had not heard of Mr. Specht until I read this piece on his passing, however, based on this piece, the World has lost one of the "good guys," who operate behind-the-scenes in order to further quality products from a very respected company. For this reason, Ibanez afficianados from every part of the globe should feel a bit of the loss but also feel extremely proud that Hoshino was in possession of such an intellectual treasure! Upon reading some of the kind words here from his friends, Mr. Specht definitely had an impact on many, with his sense of humor, his wit, even the way he laughed! It is quite clear that all of those who were touched by him will remember him quite fondly!

Paul sat in with our four piece band "JADE" throughout the Jersey area for the past nine years. Outstanding musician, great vocals and an all around Super Nice Guy. Really enjoyed the few short years I called him "friend". He will truly be missed by all of our band members and especially by me. He will always be known to me as Paul the Spechtacular. Gonna be a great jam session upstairs! Miss ya Buddy, Wayne

Because my husband also plays with the band Jade, it was my good fortune on several occasions not only to hear Paul play, but to see him rev up a crowd with his inimitable high jinks, energy and spirit at full throttle. The image of him on his knees on the dance floor with his sax wailing is one I will never forget. He lived and gave more in his all too short lifetime than many granted twice the time.

I had the honor of knowing Paul during his time at Zapf's Music in the late '70's. I still remember our conversations and his open and funny style. I never met anyone quite like him again, he was a total orginal. I'm going to find some German food, have a coffee with 7 unstirred sugars, and cry for awhile. What a loss......my deepest sympathy to his family.

I am very sad to just find out that Paul had passed away. Paul and I attended Bucks County Community College as music majors together and he was always a good friend and great musician. I also knew Paul from my days as an Ibanez endorser from 1987-1989 as a member of the pop band Pretty Poison. Paul was always a great guy in every respect and I again am very sad to hear this many months after he passed. My condolences to his family and friends. Sincerely, Lou Franco
